The Air Jordan 7 was a turning point for the Air Jordan lineup as Tinker Hatfield felt the Jordan Brand could stand on it’s own merits. This meant very minimal Nike branding and non on the exterior of the AJ7. Partial inspiration came in the form of West African Tribal culture along with the Air Huarache series which Tinker was also a part of. The end result being a collection of shoes that were more colorful, lighter and minimal compared to the six previous versions. A sock-like liner taken from the Huarache lineup was a first while the tribal influence was seen on the tongue graphics. Along with Nike branding the visible Air Unit was and translucent outsoles were not carried over. The retooled look and shoe were the center of a new advertisement campaign that no longer included Mars Blackmon but this time Bugs Bunny was MJ’s sidekick. The shoe was another important part of Michael Jordan’s history as it helped him and the Chicago Bulls’ to their second straight NBA Championship as well as his shoe of choice as a member of the USA’s Dream Team that won Olympic gold in Barcelona, Spain.
