After his first two signature shoes Michael Jordan was rumored to still be looking for more from his shoes. Ensuring that the dynamic star would not leave Nike they put their best minds and team together to ensure they created something MJ could not walk away from. This was the first, but far from the last Air Jordan that designer Tinker Hatfield created. With shoes like the Air Safari and Air Max 1 under his belt, Tinker looked at design and MJ himself to create the Air Jordan 3. The design of the shoe was something not seen before. The most relevant addition to the shoe was the usage of “elephant print” overlays, now a look directly connect to Air Jordan. The now mid-cut design also was the first Jordan model to have a visible Air unit on the heel, something Tinker took from the first Air Max. Another key design aspect of the shoe was the introduction of MJ’s official logo, the Jumpman. The silhouette placed prominently on the tongue. When Tinker and Nike presented the shoe to Jordan they also laid out plans for a full marketing campaign. The outcome being a partnership with Spike Lee aka Mars Blackmon with commercials, apparel and print ads that ensured everyone wanted to wear a pair of Air Jordan 3’s. Wearing the shoes MJ secured his second consecutive Dunk Contest in arguably the best showdowns with the final test against Dominique Wilkins. Other accolades MJ won while wearing the AJ3 was his first Most Valuable Player award and NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
